Medical Assistant Summary: Our team of medical assistants (MA) are usually comprised of nursing students, EMTs, PCA and CNAs wanting to gain extensive experience in a non-clinical setting. MAs provide our camp nurses with support services that ensure the camp’s health center operations can run effectively and efficiently. MAs are responsible for administrative as well as clinical tasks, such as maintaining camper records, preparing Medical Administration Reports, preparing campers for examination, and assisting nurses with a variety of tasks such as medication administration and recording vital signs. Our clinic is staffed 24 hours a day, with a minimum of 1-2 nurses (RNs) and four medical assistants. We also have several RNs and LPN that work day--shifts to support the ebb and flow ouf our programs.
Who you will be serving: Grotonwood is a non-profit Christian camp that predominantly serves adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) between the ages of 20-75 for one-week overnight camping experiences; our season is eight weeks long with one week prior to the season for staff training and orientation (total nine week contract).
In addition to a thriving program for adults with disabilities, Grotonwood facilitate eight weeks of day camp for neuro-typical kids age 5-12, and five weeks of overnight camps for nuero-typical kid age 7-16.
Medical Assistant Reports to: RNs and Nurse Manager
Medical Assistant Time Off: Friday pm to Sunday am
Medical Assistant Salary: $4500/season + $250 completion bonus (based on a nine-week residential contract)
Medical Assistant Housing: Our nurses and medical assistants live in our recently refurbished and modern medical apartment which is air conditioned and conveniently located in the center of camp.
Medical Assistant Contract Notes: This is a residential live-in position

Medical Assistant Responsibilities:

Assist with medical care of campers, including nutrition, medical treatments and first aid

Work with Nurse Manager and RNs to ensure campers’ health and wellbeing at all times - including following campers seizure protocols for example

Assist nurses with medication administration and other tasks as needed

Administer First Aid to campers of various ages and abilities (cuts, tummy aches, rashes etc)

Support the set up of medical equipment (ie-nebulizers and CPAP machines) and maintaining sterile technique as required

Suport the dining experience by preparing doctor prescribed and modified diets (ie-pureéd, ground moist and chopped)

Under supervision of the nurse, the MA will collect, and prepare specimens (ie-blood glucose levels for diabetic campers)

Act as liaison between camper, nurses, resident director and caregivers

Participate in camp activities as dictated by schedule or supervisor

De-escalate, and resolve conflict situations as needed

Follow all camp policies and procedures and hold staff accountable to the same

Gathering and stocking various medical supplies and OTC meds
